Since I have just finished up with Insanity, I am now faced with the decision of exactly what to do do next. I don’t want to lose progress, but I also don’t think I’m up for another round of Insanity or P90X just yet. For one thing, they are a little bit mentally intimidating, not to mention physically taxing and time consuming.

I loved the idea of “max interval training” from Insanity, but I really missed the weightlifting workouts from P90X. Not because I particularly enjoy them, really, but because I feel like whenever I take the time to do resistance workouts I seem to make progress much faster.

Yesterday I made up my mind that I am going to do another experiment on myself and post the results here. I want short, quick workouts that I don’t have to schedule around, but I also want a comprehensive full body strength program. Thus begins my new journey of alternating nothing but short, high intensity interval workouts (fifteen minute workouts, max) with a full body weightlifting regimen, 3 days each for six days a week. If this works, I’m going to make my own DVD program and sell it. I will have all chubby people like myself in the background, too, so that viewers who agree with me that watching perfectly toned, disgustingly attractive people bounce around perkily is not whatsoever motivating, in fact just disconcerting, will not have to put up with that on MY program. :) I think it’ll be a hit.

So, as much of a technology-phobe as I am sometimes, I am really embracing the cell phone apps and the program downloads that come up with creative new ways to make dieting and exercising a little more enjoyable. While searching for nifty new interval timers, I came across interval music mp3s! I thought it was a great idea, so I played around with the demos a little bit, thought it was awesome, and promptly signed up for the affiliate program (which is why you should totally click on that link up there and check them out – it’s a cool workout idea for you, and it will give me money! Yay, everyone wins!)

At first glance it looks like if you actually purchase anything, they want to send you a stack of either books or DVDs, but in actuality they just grant you access to download the free extras if you want them. The “200% refund guarantee” is the only thing that makes me somewhat wary, but if the demos are any indication, I would think the product is worth a slightly questionable-sounding refund policy. I have not purchased anything yet (I am still figuring out a safe means for me to bring my cell phone along on workouts so I can actually play the music), so if anyone has any experience with this company feel free to share it in the comments – I don’t want to accidentally promote something shady, although by and large I think it sounds like a good enough deal to me that I would buy it, and I am a jaded skeptic.

It’s energetic techno music, so if you are looking for soulful country music this probably isn’t your cup of tea – but I can’t imagine doing intervals to twangy lamentations and acoustic guitar, either. Techno is probably your best bet for heart pounding, sweat inducing goodness. Also, I quite appreciate the fact that periodically, the voice tells you “thirty more seconds” or “you have three intervals left,” etc. It completely takes away the need to obsess over the clock or glance at your interval timer, which in my opinion tends to only make the workout more agonizing.

There are options for short intervals or long intervals, and various rest periods, as well as escalating intervals. There are even beginner, intermediate, and advanced Tabata intervals, for those that really enjoy punishing themselves.

Once I get a reliable way of securing my cell phone to my body during sprints (besides holding it in one hand and praying I don’t trip and smash my phone), these interval training music mp3s are probably going to become a staple food in my workout pantry. Try out the demos first if you are interested.

Because I am so very helpful, I will provide you with another affiliate link, to save you the bother of scrolling back up to find the original. Enjoy!
