Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle Product Review
I read this book in its entirety last autumn – more than once in fact. I found it very motivating and inspirational. The section on setting goals and keeping them were especially helpful to me at the time. The book was a surprisingly easy and interesting read, for a non-fiction book. I thought the author articulated his ideas very well and was able to express his techniques with enough detail that even fitness newbies would be able to understand and follow them. He did not make even the slightest attempt to console the reader by telling them that getting ripped would be an easy process – he repeatedly hammered in the amount of effort and discipline it takes for men and women to reach a very high level of fitness. Instead of being discouraging, however, those remarks managed to inspire and challenge me.
I very much enjoyed using the formulas provided in Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle. The author, Tom Venuto, goes into a lot of detail about how to calculate exactly how many calories per day you should be eating, how often, and why. I really appreciated the extra detail, as I am often left wanting more information after reading most weight loss books and articles. I thought that there could have been more devoted to the explanation of the science behind the diet and exercise techniques, although I have a feeling that is because that is one of my personal areas of interest – in reality, there is plenty of scientific explanation provided in the book.
I thought the workout plans that were provided were very well thought out and well explained, although I did not follow them because I had just started my own workout program that I wanted to try out. He did a wonderful job of emphasizing the importance of both cardio and strength training, pointing out the various reasons why strength training is just as important for women as it is for men.
The various diet methods, including calorie cycling, were also very well explained. Again, I would have liked more technical, scientific details, but I do understand why they were not provided. I did try out one of the calorie cycling diet plans, tailored to match my caloric requirements. I ate five meals a day of a precise number of calories. It was difficult and took a lot of discipline to have meals ready and prepared every three hours exactly, but it was amazing how well that system curbed my hunger. I even found myself picking at my last couple meals of the day because I had been so satisfied with my earlier meals, even though I was eating smaller amounts at every meal than I usually do.
I thought Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle would be geared more toward the bodybuilding arena, and while it did have plenty of techniques that bodybuilders use to get in peak physical condition, it also had a lot of information that beginners can easily use to get started on a reasonable fitness plan. It was a very enjoyable experience for me, all things considered. The book was interesting to read and the customized diet plan was even more interesting to follow. I stuck with it for a significant amount of time. While I do not still follow the Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle diet plan, I do occasionally still use the book as a reference for a fitness fact or two – plus the formulas for caloric intake that the book provides are great too.
